Teaching Geochemistry

http://www.oercommons.org/courses/teaching-geochemistry/view

This resource from Macalester College provides a tutorial of the analytical techniques commonly used to characterize geological materials. The goal is to help novices "gain an understanding of mineralogical, petrological and geochemical analytical techniques." The materials here include definitions and descriptions of standard topics like balancing metamorphic reactions and user-friendly tutorials for modern thermodynamic modeling programs. Additionally, the site also contains phase diagrams for teaching, such as animated versions that guide students through these chemical reactions.

MIT OpenCourseWare: Principles of Engineering Practice

Engineering can be a difficult subject, and bringing together groups to create new technologies in energy production, bioengineering, and communications can present a wide range of logistical challenges. This fine course from MIT's OpenCourseWare presents materials from the spring 2010 version of Professor Lionel C. Kimerling's "Principles of Engineering Practice", and it tackles some of these aforementioned challenges. On the site, visitors can look over selected lecture notes from the course, the syllabus, lab materials, and case studies. The case studies are quite interesting, and they represent ideas and projects presented by students in the course. The titles of these presentations and case studies include "Solar Electricity: Problems, Constraints and Solutions" and "Summary of Options for the Growth of Solar Electricity". Also, interested parties can use the "Related Resources" area to view lectures from the course and read helpful documents like "Preserving Your Patent Rights"

Online Ethics Center for Engineering and Research

Created in 2007, this website is a superb tool for learning about the ethical dilemmas engineers face in areas such as emerging technologies, environment, safety and sustainability, and responsible research. Visitors can learn about various ethical dilemmas via the site's collection of "Cases", "Essays & Articles", "Instructional Resources", and "Other Resources". The "Cases" link contains a fascinating collection of historical cases, hypothetical cases, fictionalized cases, numerical problems, and scenarios. Visitors will find cases that address a killer robot, reverse engineering, Internet privacy, and the real case of a "computerized radiation therapy machine and its software flaws, which caused massive overdoses to patients." The "Instructional Resources" link provides various university syllabi for courses on computers and the Internet, as well as a syllabus for a course for both young people and senior citizens which addresses the future of technology. Visitors will also find an informational article on the misuse of emerging technologies, entitled "Antibiotic Resistance and Dual Use".

Plant Genome Research Outreach Portal

http://www.plantgdb.org/PGROP/pgrop.php

Based at the Iowa State University, the mission of the Plant Genome Research Outreach Portal (PGROP) is "to provide a centralized access point for location plant genome research outreach activities, programs and resources." The site contains fact sheets, lesson plans, and other materials for students and educators, including specifically themed resources on crops like maize, rice, sorghum, soybeans, and wheat. On the right-hand side of the page, visitors can use the "New and Noteworthy" area which contains links to genome databases like the Maize Genetics & Genomics database and the helpful "Fast Plants" website. Also, the "Resources Concerning" area includes peer-vetted links organized by topics like bioinformatics, genomics, molecular biology, and DNA. Finally, the site also contains the detailed report of the National Plant Genome Initiative.

Ocean Data Viewer

http://data.unep-wcmc.org/

Created and managed by a team of partners, including the United Nations, the Ocean Data Viewer offers sixteen datasets combined in a mashup style format with a political map of the world. On the homepage, visitors can toggle different datasets, such as the global distribution of coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass species, and mean sea surface temperature. Visitors can customize their own maps for different uses such as illustrating various aspects of climate change, oceanography, and marine biology. Additionally, the site provides a link to the "Global Coral Disease Database", which provides detailed data on reported coral disease outbreaks and incidences across the world's coral communities.

Teaching the Ocean System

http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/ocean/

This site brings together data sets, tools, lesson plans, and interactive visualizations to address a number of topics within this broad field of scientific inquiry. On the left-hand side of this page, visitors will find six pertinent sections, including "Teaching Materials" and "Internet Resources." The "Teaching Materials" area includes resources such as a classroom activity designed to help students learn about how climate change impacts tropical cyclone formation and coral bleaching. For those who are perhaps more visually inclined, the "Visualizations" area features helpful animations and illustrations of processes such as coastal wave mechanics and El Nino.

Test Tube

http://www.test-tube.org.uk/

The site describes its purpose as "videos behind the scenes in the world of science." The 300+ videos cover a broad spectrum of topics ranging from motorcycle science, to yaks, to the academic promotion process, to grant acceptance and denial; they can be anywhere from less than a minute to over ten. Each video contains a very brief description and a set of boxes providing more details: Who, What, When, and Where.

ScienceSeeker

http://scienceseeker.org/

ScienceSeeker is an aggregator of science blogs. The main goal is to track as many scientific blogs as possible. Unlike other aggregators, it is inclusive; i.e., the site includes all posts from a blog, whether research based or personal reflection. Biological and physical science topics are most prevalent; others cover behavioral and sociological sciences, as well as history, library, academic, and publishing-related subjects.
